A sign or display sits directly between communication and technology. The text must be readable, but the material also has to suit its size, lighting, mounting, weather and the place from which people see it.
A test setup therefore helps. A design that looks good on a laptop may be too small from across a street or have too little contrast behind glass.
Physical presentation can bring digital design, cutting, 3D printing, wood and metal together.
Test at the real viewing distance and under comparable lighting. Print part of the design at scale or make a temporary test. Look not only at size but also typeface, line spacing, reflections and background contrast.
That depends on lifetime, surface, desired appearance, outdoor use and replaceability. Vinyl is convenient for flat applications; board material can provide rigidity; separate letters or 3D parts can add depth but need a different mounting method.
Use closed vector paths, remove unnecessary duplicate lines and check dimensions. Text is often converted to paths when the machine or another computer does not have the font. Keep an editable source version as well.
