Web, information and media

Websites, domains, search results, data and digital publications consist of more components and dependencies than are visible from the outside. A problem with a website can lie in the content, but also in DNS, hosting, access or outdated information.

This website brings together information about web publishing, findability, data, visual communication and digital ownership. The aim is to understand how information is created, found, managed, transferred and preserved.

Ways into the information

Websites and online infrastructure

A website does not stand alone. Content, files, software, domain registration, DNS, email, hosting and account access together determine whether information remains reachable, transferable and manageable.

Findability and public information

Public information is collected and redisplayed by search engines, business directories, maps, archives and other systems. As a result, findability, outdated data and incorrect interpretations can become problems in their own right.

Privacy and data

Responsible data management starts by making visible what information exists, where it is stored, who can access it and which rules or agreements are relevant. This applies both to public personal data and to data inside organisations and online systems.

Visual communication

Information takes a visual and sometimes physical form. Identity, colour, file formats, print, material and medium together determine how information becomes recognisable, readable and usable.

Digital ownership and preservation

Digital files and purchases remain usable only when access, licences, storage, file formats and dependencies on services are understood as well. Preservation therefore means more than simply keeping a copy somewhere.

Questions

Much of the information can also be approached through a concrete question. The questions index brings together the questions currently addressed through the different knowledge resources and indexes.
